Motorists in Liverpool have named Richard Hammond their favourite celebrity driver, according to a new poll.

The pintsized star won the race to be crowned the city’s number one ‘Star in a Car’, leaving his Top Gear co-presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May in his wake.

Hammond, also known as the “Hamster” because of his size, landed 30 percent of the vote. He was followed by Formula One star Jenson Button in second place with 26 percent.

Button’s McClaren teammate, Lewis Hamilton, took third with 18 percent of fans plumping for him.

Local motorists told researchers for the poll, commissioned by Netcars.com, that they loved Hammond’s sense of fun and his easy going nature.

However, less than one in ten said Clarkson was their favourite celebrity driver, with the majority dismissing him as arrogant and egotistical. Top Gear co-star James May lagged behind with just seven percent of the vote.

Managing director of Netcars.com Reg Rix said: “I am sure the results of our survey will lead to lots more banter between Hammond and Clarkson, as one is a clear favourite with drivers in Liverpool.

“I am sure Hammond will take great pride in getting one over on Clarkson and May.

“But all joking aside our results demonstrate extremely well just how popular these guys are and how Top Gear and motoring shows can be enjoyed by everybody.

“In fact, women are taking more of an interest in cars and motoring in general than ever before and we have embraced this.”

Full results of the poll:

Hammond - 30%
Button - 26%
Hamilton - 18%
Clarkson - 9%
May - 7%
Other - 10%
