It was a case of trick and a real treat for ten lucky children who attended a special celebrity Halloween party at Liverpool's Speke Hall over the weekend.

It was transformed into "Spook Hall" for a ghastly Halloween Ghoul School hosted by newly appointed Head Teacher TV presenter Jeff Brazier.

After a nationwide search ten lucky pupils spent the day enjoying lessons in wizardry and witchcraft at the 15th Century hall, which was featured on popular TV series Most Haunted.

Halloween has risen in popularity dramatically in recent years as more families get into the spooky spirit of this ancient celebration.

The UK Halloween industry has grown a phenomenal 2300% since 2001 and is now worth a massive £280 million pounds.

A recent survey by Woolworths.co.uk has revealed that UK families go all out in their Halloween celebrations, spending on average over £100 on parties and Trick or Treating, second only to Christmas in terms of spending.

Hundreds of children applied for one of the coveted 10 Ghoul School places and the successful few enjoyed a day of Halloween themed lessons in magic, pumpkin carving and decoration making.

Head Teacher Jeff gave his creepiest classroom top tips and also helped choose two terrifying winners from the group to be crowned Head Boy and Head Girl of Ghoul School.

They won four tickets to scare-tastic UK theme park Alton Towers and a spooky Halloween bedroom makeover.

Woolworths.co.uk currently stocks 800 Halloween lines including scary props, piñatas, inflatables, decorations, face paints as well as Halloween sky lanterns which are increasingly popular with British families.

As part of the Ghoul School celebration Woolworths.co.uk also conducted a survey to find which school the nation thought was the scariest. Not surprisingly Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from Harry Potter came out on top closely followed by Crunchem Hall Primary School from Matilda and Forks High School in Twilight.

Scariest Schools Survey results
1.) Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from Harry Potter

2.) Crunchem Hall Primary School from Matilda

3.) Forks High School from Twilight

4.) Sunnydale High Buffy from the Vampire Slayer

5.) St Trinian’s School from St Trinian’s

6.) Sherwood School from The Addams Family

7.) Xavier Institute for Higher Learning from X Men

8.) Imperial Academy from Star Wars

9.) Miss Cackles Acadamy for Witches from The Worst Witch

10.) Tribeca Prep from The Wizards of Waverly Place
