With electricity and gas prices reaching an all time high, a local energy expert is raising awareness of the financial benefits of solar panels as they can reduce these bills by up to 50%.

Scottish Power has recently announced that their electricity prices will rise by 10% and gas by 19% by August this year and a solar panel expert thinks that many people will ‘go green’ to avoid the steep increase of costs.

Peter Bladen of Halsall based BSOLAR said: “With electricity and gas prices continuing to rise, we have seen an increase in people in making the investment of having solar panels installed. Panels can rapidly decrease fuel bills as well as being environmentally friendly.”

Homeowners with solar panels earn back money per unit of energy produced from a government scheme. The Clean Energy Cash Back Scheme rewards homeowners who generate electricity from renewable sources by paying them 43.3p per unit that is generated from the panels as well as having the added bonus of free electricity during the day.

Peter added: “It certainly does pay to be green, the financial benefits of having solar panels are becoming an irresistible lure for homeowners who want to hit back at the continuous rising costs of electricity and gas. The government’s scheme is guaranteed for 25 years, so the panels are well worth the investment.”

The scheme is available for anybody who has solar panels installed up until March 2012 .
