Police crowd control squads were stretched to breaking point when BIEBERMANIA hit Liverpool.
In scenes that the city has not witnessed since the era of Beatlemania in the 1960s a crowd of around 2000 teenage girls blocked traffic outside their idol's hotel.
Some of the youngsters were hysterical and weeping as they chanted "Justin! Justin! Justin!"
Bieber remained holed-up in the "Hard Days Night Hotel" as traffic on Victoria Street outside was brought to halt, causing rush-hour chaos in part of the the city centre yesterday.
When was seen fleetingly at a hotel window and there was a huge crescendo of screaming and noise from the crowd and some girls needed first aid treatment.
Bieber later sent a Twitter message saying: "this is crazy.there are like thousands of people out there.love everybody but gonna try and get some sleep. please don't scream. lol"
One of the girls, Eva Mason, 17, from Stoneycroft, Liverpool, said: "I dream of Justin every night.
"The word has gone round on twitter that he is here in the hotel so a pile of us said we would come down and try to get his autograph.
"There were only about 200 when we got here at 3 o'clock but there are more arriving all the time. We just want to see Justin!"
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Officers were last night working with the management of the hotel and with Justin Bieber's security team to ensure his safety, the safety of other guests and of the crowd.
North John Street was closed to traffic and police urged the public to to avoid the area if possible.
The Canadian star is in the city for his sold-out gig at the Echo Arena tonight.
