What do the original red telephone box, a Wimbledon champion, a goal net and an x-ray machine have in common?
It may sound like cryptic crossword clue, but believe it or not, all four can call Liverpool home (five if you include the very first crossword). And that’s just the beginning...
With a wealth of triumphs, discoveries and innovations, the City of Liverpool has decided to blow its own trumpet and embark on a landmark public art event to uncover and document the wealth of internationally significant, yet lesser-known facts about its incredible history, driven and informed by the people who know it best.
Liverpool Discovers, commissioned by Liverpool City Council, will see the city reveal its greatest stories never told, before a Winter’s Trail of fun and informative art installations created by exceptional artists and a brand-new Liverpool map link together the city’s points of international interest in early 2011.
Liverpool’s natural and humorous storytellers are being asked to unlock this treasure trove of hidden secrets by telling the world what they know via the Liverpool Discovers leaflet.
Once received, the facts will be verified by a panel of historians, with the most interesting stories inspiring the installations and map.
A fleet of eight customised pedal -powered ‘Artmobiles’ will also take visitors around selected parts of the trail.
The ten categories included for consultation are: Arts and Entertainment, Health, Science and Technology, Sports, Trade and Commerce, Architecture and Open Spaces, Transport, Maritime, Social Justice/Radicals and Music.
The consultation will run from 16th August until 20th September.
The online form is available now at www.culture.org.uk, with printed leaflets ready and in the outlets named below by Friday 20th August.
The award-winning Wild in Art have been commissioned to bring the region to life once again this winter and have devised this innovative and exciting event as the key part of the seasons programme of cultural events, entitled A Winter’s Trail.
They are working in partnership with Liverpool Lantern Company on the artistic programme and Open Culture on the consultation programme, with further collaboration planned with the city’s cultural sector to form part of Liverpool’s impressive cultural offer.

"We want people to have a lot of fun with us by sharing their stories, as well as enjoying the trail early next year.”

“I can’t wait to hear and read some of the entries. Liverpool is a city packed with so many wonderful people and fantastic storytellers that every day I hear something amazing that I hadn’t heard before.
"This project is an opportunity to share stories, uncover new tales and find out more facts about what makes Liverpool the wonderful place it is. I can’t wait to discover even more about our city.”
