The director of Terminator Salvation has taken the rap for Christian Bale's foul-mouthed rant on set claiming the situtation was 'embarrasing.'
Batman star Bale, 35, fired an expletive-laden tirade at Shane Hurlbut, the film's director of cinematography, who, he claimed ruined his concentration during an intense scene.
The audio of the actor, which caught him spluttering 37 F-words in four minutes and calling for him to be fired, was caught on tape and became an overnight viral sensation.
Hollywood insiders agreed that Hurlbut had crossed the line, but Bale apologised, saying that his language was 'inexcusable', and that he had 'acted like a punk.'
McG described the audio as 'wildly offensive' but defended his actor by claiming that the rant was 'taken out of context.'
The director, who uses the single name McG, said his demand for perfection during filming of the £100million Terminator Salvation triggered Bale's tirade.
He said: "I'm to blame for the whole thing.
"First and foremost it's my job to create a safe environment on the set at all times so that actors can explore any given emotion and always believe in the sanctity of the film set."
McG swore at the Batman actor constantly to deliberately aggravate him and keep him in character, but said that in reality the American Pyscho star is a caring, family man.
He added: "In a great many ways this is a war movie so I'm on the set getting in Christian's face saying: 'You'd better get your ----ing s--- together.
"'You'd better fire up and make me believe your life is in danger, now get off your ----ing ass Christian and go and show me something.'
"Now that's going to get him fired up in the spirit of creating a real life and death performance but that's never meant to get outside that arena.
"The truth is simply Christian's a good guy.
"Don't accuse him of being a bad guy because he's not.
"He loves his family, Christian's an actor's actor and he operates from a place of passion.
"He'll be the first to admit, 'Wow, I flew off the handle,' but he was very much involved in what I was driving him to."
Terminator Salvation is now showing at Liverpool One Odeon and other cinemas
