Gymnastics champion Beth tweddle is among anumber of celebrity ambassadors turned into giant puppets to spread the message of Liverpool's Year of Health and Wellbeing 2010.

The celebrities have each been selected to represent one of the five ways to wellbeing – Be Active, Connect, Keep Learning, Take Notice and Give.

They will be involved in helping to promote the programme throughout the remainder of the year.

beth represents "Be Active" and the other celebrity ambassadors are:-
BBC Radio Merseyside broadcaster Roger Phillips, representing Connect
Renowned writer, Frank Cottrell Boyce representing Keep Learning
Acclaimed artists, the Singh Twins representing Take Notice
Charity founder, Stephen Yip MBE, representing Give

Each ambassador has been photographed next to five giant puppets, commissioned to represent each of the five ways to wellbeing at events throughout the year, starting with the Lord Mayor's Pageant.

The puppets have been produced by Hope Street Limited and designer Rowan Watts.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing are five simple ways to improve personal wellbeing by making small, achievable lifestyle changes. In fact, evidence has shown that by building the five ways into your routine you could add up to seven and a half years to your life – just think of it as the mental equivalent of eating five pieces of fruit or veg each day.

Gideon Ben-Tovim, Chair of Liverpool Primary Care Trust said: “Our city has a rich history of culture, the arts and sports and I am delighted that we have managed to secure commitment from a group of people who I know will be first-class ambassadors for the 2010 Year of Health and Wellbeing campaign. Not only are they all experts in their fields but they are also deeply passionate about encouraging people to make positive differences to their health and wellbeing.”

Councillor Roz Gladden, Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Care, said: "Liverpool couldn't have wished for a better group of ambassadors to promote it's Year of Health and Wellbeing. Beth, Roger, Stephen, the Singh Twins and Frank are great role models as they have all been brilliantly flying the flag for the city and how to live a more fulfilling life for many, many years. Their support is a huge boost to our campaign to improve life for everyone in Liverpool and we all look forward to working with them to achieve our goal."

Beth Tweddle, MBE, double World and European gymnastics champion, said: "I'm delighted to the Be Active Ambassador for Liverpool's Year of Health and Wellbeing. I know from my experience that any kind of exercise will always make you feel good and have some kind of physical and mental benefit. Not everyone can be a gymnast but simple things like gardening, walking to the shops or even housework can make a big difference to your energy levels if you make it part of your daily routine. Liverpool is also blessed with many fantastic parks and the leisure centres all have brilliant schemes for all ages, so there should be no excuse in Liverpool not to get out, get fit and get a better life."

Roger Phillips said: “The 2010 Year of Health and Wellbeing campaign is a fantastic opportunity to engage with the people of Liverpool and provide us all with a chance to learn about how to make healthy lifestyle changes in a fun and interactive way. Connect is a vital way to wellbeing but it is often taken for granted or not recognised by individuals until they find themselves in isolation. I’m looking forward to helping everybody across the city and beyond learn how they can find positive to connect or reconnect with each others.”

Frank Cottrell Boyce said: “I have always believed in the significance and value of learning. Not only does it help to expand your horizons but it can bring you into contact with new people as well as having a positive impact on self-esteem. The Reader Organisation’s Get Into Reading project is a great example of how people can be brought together to share the learning experience. Learning doesn’t just relate to academia – it is about opening your mind, so learning a new skill or taking up a new hobby are just as beneficial.”

The Singh Twins said: “Liverpool has played an important part in our lives as artists and it is a pleasure and privilege to be ambassadors for the Year of Health and Wellbeing. We heavily identify with the theme of ‘Take Notice’, which can be about being aware of the environment and people around us to valuing the simpler things in life – like an artwork in the office to the natural beauty found in our everyday surroundings. All of these uplifting, relaxing, inspiring experiences can greatly add to your quality of life on a daily basis and we hope to encourage as many people as possible to make these small but very rewarding steps.”

Stephen Yip said: “I am delighted to be an ambassador for 2010 Year of Health and Wellbeing and representing one of the five ways to wellbeing. As someone who has given their time and energy to make a positive difference to people’s lives for over 30 years, I appreciate the sense of joy and pride that comes with volunteering and committing yourself to helping others. I applaud this campaign for highlighting this important issue in the public arena.”
