Wirral Council is launching a home composting scheme with the aim of reducing the amount of waste being sent by residents to landfill.
As part of the new scheme, which is being run in partnership with Straight plc, low price compost bins will be made available to residents from as little as £14 for a 220 litre Compost Converter or £17 for a 330 litre model.
A wide range of other home composters and composting accessories will also be available to residents, including wormeries, kitchen caddies and bases as well as water butts.
Residents can take advantage of these special offers by visiting www.getcomposting.com. Alternatively, residents can order their home compost bins by calling 0844 571 4444. On this number, residents can also receive helpful composting tips and advice from the composting team on how to get started.
Composting is a cost effective and natural process that transforms kitchen and garden waste into a valuable resource. Compost is a nutrient-rich food product for the garden, which helps to improve soil structure, maintain moisture levels, and keeps the soil's PH balance in check while helping to suppress plant disease.
More than a third of household waste is made up of organic material which can be composted. For example, garden waste such as grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings and unwanted plants or fruit and vegetable peelings and even tea bags are all ideal for composting.
Robert Jones, Recycling Manager at Wirral Council said, “We want to encourage residents to reduce the amount of waste that they send to landfill. Composting selected kitchen and garden waste is an easy and effective way of reducing, reusing and recycling some of the daily waste we produce, while providing significant benefits for our gardens and the wider environment. It is simple to do and once you get started, you will be surprised at just how much daily household waste can be recycled this way.”
To further mark the launch, Council officers will be hosting two events at local garden centres to offer advice on home composting and giveaway one bag of of compost, made from the Borough’s recycled brown bin garden waste, to residents on a first come first served basis.
These events take place at Port Sunlight Garden Centre, The Causeway, Port Sunlight on Saturday 5th June and Carr Farm Garden and Craft Centre, Birkenhead Road, Meols on Saturday 12th June.
