A number of local community projects will receive a share of more than £100,000 in funding, following a series of public events held this month.
Since November 2009, Liverpool City Council has worked closely with LCVS and the existing Your Community Matters events to pilot their Community Funding Events. These events give residents an opportunity to vote on small pots of funding for local projects in their area and have their say on issues in their community.
Organisations which have benefited from the February Community Funding Events include PERC and Volunteer Reading Help at the Central ward event on 1 February, St. Teresa’s Majorettes from the Norris Green ward event on 16 February and Calder Kids Adventure Playground from the Church ward event on 11 February.
PERC a toy library service for child carers and families received £3,000. This will pay for a storage system for the toys and equipment, allowing families and children to clearly view what’s on offer.
The Volunteer Reading Help organisation received £1,430 for the “Reach Out and Read” (ROAR) programme, which will fund free workshops for parents on how to help children with their reading.
St. Teresa’s Majorettes, a girl’s dance troupe received £2,462. This will be spent on the purchase of new uniforms, pumps, socks, hair bobbles and clips, as well as on transport to the venues where the events take place.
Calder Kids Adventure Playground received £2,716 to refurbish a herb garden and incorporate accessible vegetable/fruit/plant beds for children and young people with disabilities. This will also encourage people to care for the environment by growing their own plants, fruit and vegetables, using recyclable products.
Karen Harris, Neighbourhood Partnership Officer at LCVS said: “The events have proved to be a great success, with residents voting on funding for some really worthwhile projects, which are bringing about positive change in Liverpool’s communities.”
Attendees had the following to say about the Community Funding Events:
“This has been a fantastic event for raising awareness of different projects going on in my local area and has made me feel a valued member of the community,” - a resident at the Central ward event on 01 February.
“I think it is important for the community to have a say in their community and this event meets that criteria. Participation works,” - a representative of a community group at the Kensington and Fairfield ward event on 09 February.
Community Funding Events and Your Community Matters events are continuing throughout February and March
