Specialist neuroscience hospital The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust has expanded its outreach services with a new satellite clinic in Merseyside.
The new, consultant-led neurology clinic in Birkenhead is the latest in a series of initiatives by The Walton Centre aimed at taking specialist neurology services closer to patients’ homes.
The weekly clinic is ideal for first referrals for neurological conditions such as a first seizure; headaches; suspected demyelination; Parkinson’s disease and neuropathies.
Clinics are led by consultants Dr Chrissie Burness and and Dr Omer Suliman who will alternate each week. Currently the clinic is every Monday although the day may change in the future.
Patients can undergo diagnostics, blood tests, neurophysiology and radiology locally in Wirral.
The extended outreach service follows discussions between clinical leaders from The Walton Centre and GP clinical commissioning leads in Wirral.
Preliminary discussions are now underway with GPs in other areas about the possibility of setting up similar community clinics.
The Laird Street clinic follows the success of a new team of community based advanced neurology nurses who run community clinics in Eastham, Hoylake and Meols; can visit various nursing homes or patients in their homes; and at Arrowe Park Hospital.
Two are in post in Wirral and four are in training to be deployed in Liverpool, Southport and Knowsley.
Walton Centre Clinical Director for Neurology Nick Fletcher said: “The community neurology nurses scheme has been evaluated and is extremely successful. We have regular enquiries from around the country from clinicians keen to follow our model and offer enhanced support in the community for patients with long term neurological conditions.
“The Laird Street clinic will offer an even more responsive service, nearer to patients’ homes. It will also improve dialogue between GPs and neurologists by offering referral advice and guidance.”
