The lights are back on at Broadway - St.Helens Council’s newly revamped state of the art sports centre at Grange Park.
The centre has had a £291,000 refit thanks to £250,000 from Badminton England for the creation of a regional badminton centre and £41,000 from St.Helens Council to develop Broadway as a centre of excellence for youth activities.
St.Helens Badminton Limited operate the centre from Monday to Friday with activities including club badminton sessions, junior league badminton and coaching, women only, fifty plus, disability sessions, dance, Taekwando, boxing plus school competitions plus more.
Now more free activities with a wider range of sports and physical activities designed for young people aged between 10 to 19 on Friday afternoons and over weekends. These are provided in partnership with St.Helens Council’s youth service and sports development team.
These include sessions on cheerleading, trampolining, break dancing and boxing. More activities are planned. Tutors are fully qualified, all equipment is provided and sessions are free of charge.
Council Leader Marie Rimmer said: “We were keen not to loose this facility. We valued the contribution it made to the community and its activities for young people. Badminton England were looking for such a facility for its sub regional programme so timing was perfect. When I last visited the site almost twelve months ago it was cold and unwelcoming. The building had been locked up since the high school closed; the hall itself was poorly lit and in places the floor had worn through to the foundations below. The balcony was cluttered with old equipment and the site was inaccessible for anyone with mobility issues. It was clear something had to be done, this facility had been well used by the community over many years and it was evident the demand still existed in this area of the borough.
The challenge we faced was how to revive this worn out building.Partnership is often an over used word today, but the building has been brought back to life because of the commitment of a number of groups and organisations working together. .”
