A Liverpool counsellor on eating disorders is offering a practical training day for health professionals and students this September.

Leigh Best, an Integrative Psychotherapist, will deliver the training across a range of issues surrounding eating disorders.

Previously delivering workshops to a wide variety of organisations, Leigh founded the voluntary organisation Talking Eating Disorders (TEDS) in 2000 following her daughter's 8 year struggle with an eating disorder. As well as voluntary support work, Leigh is also a lecturer on a Foundation Degree in Counselling, and runs a private practise as a psychotherapist. Her daughter has made a full recovery.

TEDS are part of B-EAT’s Self Help Network, the UK’s largest charity providing support and information for sufferers.

Leigh said: "Over 1.6 million people in the UK are affected by eating disorders.

"Resources available for sufferers are limited.

"Anorexia has the highest suicide rate of any other psychological condition.

"Sufferers and their families are often left to cope alone.

"Specialist services are often costly, and specialist Training Services are scarce."

Leigh, along with her team of volunteer co-workers, organises the only Eating Disorders Carers Conferences in the North West to raise awareness of this condition.

With extensive experience of working with sufferers and their families, Leigh will deliver training suitable for all clinicians working with sufferers eating disorders (and associated problems) or supporting families.

Leigh added: "This is going to be a very practical, “hands on” day.

"I will share my knowledge and encourage open and reflective discussion of this complicated illness.

"A basic understanding of psychodynamic, cognitive, and person centred approaches to counselling will be useful but not mandatory.

"The course is supported by Handouts, and includes a Certificate for CPD."
