Two of the region’s best known and biggest charities have joined forces for two white-hot fundraising events later this year.
Clatterbridge Cancer Research and Claire House Children’s Hospice forged their ‘charities of fire’ partnership to combine their individual fire walk and candle walk initiatives, to increase participation and funds.
The partnership will ensure funds from each event are raised in the most cost effective way by helping to share costs.
Catherine Sandow, Head of Fundraising for Clatterbridge Cancer Research, said: “We are so excited about this partnership. It felt right for us to join together for these two events as there is crossover in the work we both do – we cover the same area and, of course, a good proportion of the children and young people who need the services of Claire House are cancer sufferers.
“We’ve long been admirers of the work they do and feel there is a real synergy between two charities working across cancer research and patient care.
“We both agreed that in the current economic climate, going into partnership with a complementary charity would help cut event costs and attract support for two very compelling causes.
“We have a duty to make sure every penny we spend is put to the best use possible. We’re listening to donors and making changes in how we fundraise.”
Clatterbridge Cancer Research needs to raise £2m every year to fight cancer in a region with the UK’s worst survival rates.
The charity supports a dedicated team of scientists working in Liverpool with cancer patients’ DNA to learn more about the types of the disease that affect individuals.
The addition of a number of pieces of high speed analysis equipment has brought breakthroughs in treatment much closer and the team is working hard to help clinicians target drugs more effectively.
Given its work in providing respite, palliative and end-of-life care for babies, children and young adults with life-limiting conditions, Claire House is an important and high profile charity in the region.
Based in Bebington, Wirral and further supported with a ‘hospice to home’ service, it takes families from Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, West Lancashire and the Isle of Man.
The charity needs to find around £2.5m funding year on year.
“This feels like the right move for us, going out to the public to raise money for two different areas, patient care and research, and we can’t wait to get started. I’m sure this will prove a very fruitful partnership for us,” said Pat Faragher, Director of Fundraising for Claire House Children’s Hospice.
“We have great respect for the work of Clatterbridge Cancer Research.”
Bromborough Community Fire Station services the catchment area for both charities and fully supports the ‘partnership of fire’ between Clatterbridge Cancer Research and Claire House Children’s Hospice.
Sarah Patterson, Station Locality Manager for the Wirral District of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Both the Firewalk and Midnight Candle Walk sound like great events, run by two superb charities.
“I’m sure they will be a huge success and we look forward to supporting them in their fundraising efforts.”
The charities’ firewalk, at The Farmers Arms in Frankby, Wirral, will see warm-hearted participants queuing to walk barefoot over hot coals on Saturday 27 August.
Liverpool’s Sefton Park is the venue for the Midnight Candle Walk on Friday 11 November.
