More than 200 hospital staff, patients and visitors agreed to join the National Organ Donor register, thanks to an awareness drive at University Hospital Aintree in Liverpool.
Teams from Aintree and the Royal Liverpool Hospital ran a special stall aimed at encouraging both staff and visitors to sign up during the week of 4th to 8th July.
A total of 200 staff, patients and visitors agreed to sign up to the national register.
Dr Gary Francis, Medical Director at University Hospital Aintree, said: "Most people agree that they support organ donation, but it’s taking that extra step to make sure that they are on the donor register. One person can save the lives of up to eight people through organ donation, and one tissue donor can help up to 60 people."
"This was an excellent response, and the staff who ran the stand should be really proud of what they have achieved. I would also like to thank our Foundation Trust Governors who joined them on the stand."
There are 10,000 people waiting for an organ transplant across the UK and the theme of Transplant Week 2011 was 'What Are You Waiting For?' to highlight the plight of those currently on the waiting list.
On average, three people who need a transplant will die each day in the UK. Waiting times for transplants are high because more donors are needed.
