A Liverpool based study has revealed that 52% of pensioners over 65 and 41% of children have not heard of climate change.

Further study findings show that 59% of children leave the tap running when they brush their teeth and 62% of over 65s didn’t own energy saving products.

Leading social landlord Riverside commissioned students from The Liverpool of University to carry out the research, so staff could have a greater insight into the needs of the communities in which it works.

Students from the Department of Civic Design, worked with sheltered scheme tenants in Netherley and school children from Bootle, aged between nine and ten. They also carried out a door-to-door survey to gather a wide range of views. Out of the three groups interviewed, more were concerned about energy rather than water usage.

Sophie Cavanagh, Riverside’s Strategic Affordable Warmth Officer said: “Climate change is widely seen as possibly the biggest challenge to humankind of the 21st century.

"We commissioned the University of Liverpool to do this research, as there was a need to gain greater understanding of how Riverside tenants behave in relation to energy and water use within their homes and the motivations behind this behaviour.

“We are working on methods of engaging at a deeper level with our tenants on how they can live in a more energy efficient way, not only to reduce their impact on the environment but to save them money.”

Karan Grover, a third year degree student from Regional and Town Planning course, helped co-ordinate the study.

He said: “Raising public awareness towards environmental issues is the first step in preserving our planet's resources."
