Youngsters from 25 St Helens primary schools shared the spotlight as they collected their Young Citizen awards during a special ceremony at St. Helens Town Hall.

The annual St. Helens Young Citizen Concert, organised by Allanson Street Primary School in conjunction with St.Helens Council, is a celebration of all that's good about today's youth.

Many have overcome adversity or personal tragedy to lead normal lives - or gone above and beyond the call of duty to set a great example to friends and fellow pupils at their respective schools.

The purpose of the Young Citizens' Concert is to encourage and celebrate
good citizenship among all the schools within the borough of St Helens.

Each primary school has the opportunity to nominate one child to be presented with their Young Citizens' Award in front of family, friends, staff and invited guests.

There was an added bonus for Georgina Martin pupil at St Theresa's RC
Primary School whose efforts also gained her a special Police Award
presented by Superintendent Rowley Moore of Merseyside Police.

The event was attended by guests including the Mayor of St Helens,
Councillor Tom Hargreaves and Lord Alton of Liverpool, Director of The
Roscoe Foundation for Citizenship, who spoke on the background and
importance of the awards.

Deputy Head Teacher Paul Boyle said: "We feel it's really important for our children's good citizenship to be celebrated and that good citizenship is vital to the future of any town.

"At Allanson Street we believe that we need to make that extra effort to get that message across - and that the vast majority of our children are good citizens."

Compere for the evening was Norman Haddock, while entertainment was provided by a choir of children from Allanson Street Primary School, Parish C of E Primary School and St.Ann's C of E Primary School under the direction of Phillipa Russon from the Schools Music Service.

The awards celebrate citizenship, and enable individual schools to present their Young Citizens Awards - in the shape of a bronze statue provided to each school in Merseyside by Liverpool John Moores University.

The children have their nominations read out and receive their awards on
stage in front of a packed Town Hall that includes parents, guardians and VIP guests.

Prizes were presented by Carole Hudson, Chief Executive of St.Helens Council and Lord Alton.
