Residents in Liverpool witnessed the arrival of the world’s biggest Pass the Parcel attempt yesterday, as the charity Make-A-Wish Foundation UK brought its birthday festivities to town.

To mark its 25th anniversary, Make-A-Wish is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest Pass the Parcel.

The parcel has embarked on a magical ten-day tour, granting 25 special wishes to young people who are fighting life-threatening illnesses and the hospitals that care for them.

The enormous parcel, wrapped as a gigantic present, measures 3.35m length, 2.44m breadth by 1.88m depth; a total of 15.37 cubic metres and began its adventure in London on 7 June.

Neil Jones, Make-A-Wish Chief Executive, said: “This June, we are celebrating a wonderful milestone in the history of Make-A-Wish - 25 years of making wishes a reality.

“Since 1986, we have had a single purpose: to grant magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses and we want to rally as much support as we can, to help us on our wish-granting journey over the next 25 years.

Waved off by celebrity supporters Hannah Spearritt and Keith Chegwin, the parcel began its exciting journey at Evelina Children’s Hospital in London, the first of 25 stops in the UK.

The ‘Pass the Parcel’ tour made its 19th stop in Liverpool on 13 June, where one of the 25 parcel layers was unwrapped, revealing a special gift - a trip to Disney Land Florida 7 year old Jack McLinden.

Neil added: “The ‘Pass the Parcel’ tour is a fantastic way of delivering a wish in a very special way to children, hospices and hospitals around the nation. It’s our way of saying thank you to all those people who have helped and, of course, put the smiles back on the faces of the young people who have been through so much.

“We hope that the tour will encourage everyone to follow us on our journey and support us by donating whatever they can to help make our 25th anniversary year our best year ever. ”

Rebecca Poole, Press Officer at Alder Hey, said: “We are so excited to be part of the 25th anniversary celebrations for Make-A-Wish this June and to be involved in the amazing ‘Pass the Parcel’ tour!

“Make-A-Wish has been a great support to so many children, families and hospitals in the UK over the past quarter of a century and we hope that this will continue for many years to come. The children at our hospital were so excited about the arrival of the huge parcel - it has been such a special experience and brilliant to see so many happy faces as the parcel arrived outside the hospital.”
