Runcorn children have a new playground to look forward to this summer.
Work started last week on a £100,000 play area, which being built next to Palace Fields Community Centre. In perfect timing with the school summer holidays, the playground will be ready for action in early July.
Funded by social landlord Riverside and Halton Borough Council, the playground will have an exhilarating zip wire, spinning dish, large basket swing and slide. Named “Uplands Community Park,” by local boy Jamie Boyle, 9, in a recent competition, the park will have an “extreme” section aimed at older children and more gentle equipment suited to toddlers.
Sian Martin Baez, Regeneration Officer for Riverside said: “There has been an increased demand for a new play area in the Palace Fields neighbourhood over the past few years. Uplands will be a great asset for local children, as well as complementing the popular community centre. It’s great that young people are getting the equipment that they chose and we hope they find the play area challenging but fun.”
The park was designed by landscape architects Mouchel and is being built by Marbury Landscapes Ltd, contractors who have worked closely with Riverside in the past. Local children and youth clubs were consulted on the design of the playground, the aim being to create a park that meets the needs of the local children.
Uplands Community Park will be the third playground that Riverside has created in Runcorn and joins Brooker’s Den and Diddy’s Den in Halton Brook. Both parks recently won a prestigious Green Apple award for sustainability, beating off stiff competition from the likes of Marks and Spencer and E-on.
