Hugh Baird College students filled the great hall at St George’s Hall last night (10th January 2011) for a ‘Showcase of Creative Talent’.
The event brought together the annual competitions held by the College’s School of Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy and a range of displays by the School of Creative Arts. Highlights included Floristry competitions and displays, an art and design exhibition and visual merchandising displays, with lively entertainment by the Performing Arts and Music Technology students.
The College’s Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy competitions always produce dramatic results and this year was no exception. The spectacular Total Look Team Event was themed ‘A Night at the Theatre’ and students interpreted the theme with titles such as ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘A Night at the Operating Theatre’.
Hugh Baird’s Floristry students showcased their themed balloon art and floral decorations around the venue, as well as demonstrating their skills in the live competitions. Celebrating the stunning venue, their creations included giant balloon statues depicting St George and the Dragon.
Performing Arts students took to the stage with extracts from High School Musical, Wicked and Chicago, whilst Level 3 Hairdressing and Media Make-up student, Paris Graham-Jones amazed the audience with her singing. The 19 year old from Crosby filled the Great Hall with her stunning voice with performances of Hallelujah, My Heart Will Go On and Wake Me Up Inside.
In total, more than 250 Hugh Baird College students took part in the event watched by an audience of specially invited guests, friends and family. The competition judges included industry experts and local employers. Newcomers to the judging panel this year were John Robinson and Julie Hulthen from John Paul Hairdressing in Crosby and Emma Currie from Rouge in Bootle.
Winners on the night included 15 year old Litherland High School student, Ashleigh Lomax who took first place in the Commercial Nail Art competition. Her win is particularly significant as Ashleigh is part of the School Link programme at Hugh Baird College and was competing alongside 16-18 year olds.
The Total Look Team event was won by the ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ team, made up of Lauren Edison (Tuebrook), Lucy Evans-Armitage (Wavertree), Sarah Haygarth (Tuebrook), Abby Murphy (Tuebrook), Jilly Peel (Bootle), Rebecca Weaver (Norris Green).

The College’s Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy Competitions prepare students for the North West heats of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists competitions in Blackpool, where this year Hugh Baird College will be hoping to retain the title of Best College in the North West for an impressive sixth year running.
