From 6 June - 16 June, a full size grass court will be erected on Chavasse Park and open for members of the general public to come and have a go at tennis, completely free of cost.
The court will be open to school groups and to the general public daily from 12.00 to 15.00, and professional tennis coaches will also be on hand to provide free coaching and advice.
Meanwhile, each evening from 18:00 to 20:00, there will be a corporate challenge match taking place. These matches will see many of the tournament’s different sponsors battling it out against a competitor firm on court.
Key corporate matches confirmed so far will include:
Thursday 7 June – Liverpool Community Health (LCH) vs Spire Hospital
Friday 8 June – Kenyon Fraser vs Liverpool Community College
Monday 11 June - Brabners Chaffe Street vs Mazars
Tuesday 12 June - Radio City vs BBC Radio Merseyside
Anders Borg, Tournament Director says, “With the tournament just a couple of weeks away now, we thought this would be a really fun way to help promote the event and get more of the local community from Liverpool involved.
“One of my main aims in starting the tournament eleven years ago was to help introduce the sport to more people in Merseyside. I wanted to take tennis out of what can sometimes be a bit of an elitist environment, and to make it more accessible for people – why shouldn’t tennis happen in a public park or in the middle of a shopping centre?
“Liverpool is a city that is famous for sport. Football is already huge here, but I think tennis could be too – it’s a great game, easy to pick up, it doesn’t cost a lot and it’s a great way to stay fit and healthy.”
The tournament itself will be held at Calderstones Park between 20 – 24 June, including one day for youngsters (June 20), followed by the four day main tournament event, which organisers hope will attract over 25,000 spectators.
Over the past ten years the tournament has played host to some of the greatest names in tennis hall of fame including John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Goran Ivanisevic, Martina Hingis, Caroline Wozniacki, and Bjørn Borg.
This year’s tournament will include major tennis stars such British ace, Greg Rusedski, former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek and Virginia Wade amongst its player line up.
