Aintree heavy weight sensation a success

Aintree Racecourse held their first heavy weight contest last weekend officially marking the course as one of the UK’s British Boxing Board venues.

More than 2500 people attended the contest between Olympian boxer David Price and Sam Sexton for the Lonsdale Belt.

The contest was filmed by Sky TV and organised by Frank Maloney Promotions.

Organisers had to convert the Equestrian Centre to create a world class boxing venue in the space of just 24 hours.

Debbie Slee, Conference and Events Manager at Aintree Racecourse said: “This is the first event of its kind to be held at the racecourse and we are looking forward to staging a series of high profile contests over the coming months.”

David Price won the contest on Saturday, claiming a comprehensive victory over Sam Sexton by technical knockout.

The referee called a halt to proceedings in the fourth round of a one-sided clash when Sexton was sent crashing to the canvas.

Aintree is now one of the North West’s leading sports and events venues. Its £35m redevelopment nearly five years ago means the racecourse now boasts eight main suites, 46 syndicate rooms and 4,800 sq m exhibition space which can accommodate an event of virtually any size from a small business meeting to a conference or sporting event.
