Wayne Rooney has collected nearly £4,000 in fines during his race for the Premiership title after failing to file accounts and annual returns for four of his companies.

The Man Utd star is so late filing accounts for one of the firms in his business stable that the Registrar of Companies has said the firm risks being struck off.

A Companies House source said: "Wayne Rooney's companies are so far past the deadline they are at risk of being officially struck off.

"It'll be the next step and should have technically happened by now."

The Croxteth-born striker's defense has apparently been to hold up his hands and say 'it wasn't my job.'

According to his spokesman filing the company accounts was the responsibility of Formation Group, the agent he severed ties to earlier this year.

Rooney's new representatives said that failure to do so will result in legal action.
