Liverpool workplace health consultancy Health@Work say shocking new statistics on stress show not enough is being done to tackle it.
The Mental Health Foundation’s Be Mindful survey showed that one in five people suffer from stress on a daily basis, with people under the age of 25 most vulnerable.
With 11 million working days already estimated to be lost due to stress, the figures follow on from another recent survey showing stress to be the number one cause of long term sickness.
Programme Manager Keith Gorman said: “The statistics are alarming, they show the government and businesses still do not take the implications of stress as importantly as they need to. There is still a lack of understanding and a stigma about stress which is leaving people with even more anxiety.
“At Health@Work we visit workplaces as part of the Charter and train employers on how to spot any early warning signs of workers suffering from a mental health issues; and advise employees on simple changes they can make to support and reduce the likelihood of them having any mental health problems.”
Spotting the symptoms of stress in the workplace can be difficult but specialists say people in charge need to be more vigilant for the physical signs of stress. These include headaches, stomach pains, tiredness and acne.
Health@Work is currently working with more than 100 Merseyside-based companies to help them tackle issues such as stress through the “Workplace Wellbeing Charter”, a healthy lifestyle accreditation that helps to ensure good practice in the office.
Funded by Liverpool PCT signing up to the Health Work and Wellbeing Charter is free for businesses. For more information call Health@Work on 0151 236 6608.
