A firm of Liverpool architects is celebrating the completion of its most significant project to date – a £14m complex for university students.
ABW Architects, based in Cook Street, was founded by Andrew Brown and Simon Almond in 2008.
The firm now employees eight staff and has built a reputation for eco-friendly designs that place a strong emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency.
ABW’s latest project, the innovative Hub building at Edge Hill University, will house a number of student services and dining areas.
The 4,900 square-metre facility is thermally efficient with a design that promotes natural light and ventilation. Energy will be recycled, for example from cooking areas, to provide heating.
A solar-powered hot water supply, LED lighting and high levels of insulation have also been incorporated into the energy efficient design.
The Hub has been designed to achieve ‘excellent’ status under BREEAM – an environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings.
ABW director and co-founder Simon Almond said: “The Hub is our most recent project in the higher education sector, and we are thrilled to see it being enjoyed by students.
“As a practice, we place a strong emphasis on teamwork and going beyond the call of duty.
“We believe this approach will hold us in good stead in the future as we look to build on our success over the past three years.”
Almond and Brown formed ABW amidst the global financial crisis of 2008 yet have headed a number of successful projects since, including a university gymnasium and sports complex and student housing.
Away from higher education, contracts to date include a the design of a railway engineering workshop, a local authority ‘one stop shop’, three private residences and the award winning Neston Cricket Club.
Commenting on the company and its success, Brown said: “We have built a real family atmosphere at ABW and are passionate about what we do.
“Our relatively small size allows us to be extremely hands-on when working with a client on a specific project, and we believe this sets us apart from our competitors.
“The past three years have been the most rewarding of my professional life, and I’m sure Simon would agree.”
