After working on The Climatlantic Project since 2010, Merseytravel have officially launched their new website developed to engage and encourage schoolchildren and students to think more about environmentally sustainable mobility and energy saving.
The website is part of a European wide project in association with other countries located along the Atlantic coastline. Working in partnership with these countries, the scheme allows an opportunity for learning and development on ways to reduce collective carbon footprints around Europe. Individually or as a school, pupils can use the website to pledge ways they can help reduce CO2 and save the planet.
Tasked with the social behaviour element of this European project, Merseytravel have worked to develop three main areas with which to engage young people across Liverpool city region, EcoCruises across the Mersey, an environmental poetry competition and the new Climatlantic website.
The launch was held at Merseytravel’s Ferry Terminal at Pier Head with Pan-Asian Restaurant Matou providing lunch and refreshments for all the guests.
Headteachers and senior teaching staff from all the local boroughs, including Wirral, Sefton, St. Helen’s, Knowsley and Liverpool attended the waterfront launch, with guests invited on a high-tech ArtsBus for a chance to use the new website. Liz Chandler, Director of Corporate Development at Merseytravel addressed the guests at the event.
Neil Scales, Chief Executive and Director General at Merseytravel said: “Using the ArtsBus as a platform to demonstrate the new website was fantastic.
"It allowed guests to come on board, use the 18 laptops and get to grips with all the resources and information the website has to offer.
"Climatlantic is a fun and easy to use website for people who want to find out more about the environment and making smarter travel choices like using public transport, cycling or walking.
"The website boasts different sections including a kid’s area with fun games that introduce important issues for children and young people.
"The website has a pledge area, where pupils or schools as a whole, can commit to make more sustainable lifestyle choices – whether it be setting up a walking bus to school, setting up a school recycling project or energy saving at school or at home – everything will be added to our pledge totaliser.
"We’re hoping for a bit of healthy competition between the schools to see who will be the best!”
The website also has free cross-curricular resources, provided to introduce the key themes of climate change and responsible travel choices. There are plenty of lesson plans, activities, worksheets and assembly ideas for teachers to introduce sustainable travel choices and climate change activities into the classroom.
