Six Virgin Media employees from across the country donned their trainers to run a charity relay race from Manchester to Liverpool.
The team, who will all be taking part in the Virgin London Marathon in April, staged the ‘Great North Relay Race’ from Wythenshawe to the Albert Dock as a warm up activity to help raise much needed funds for their chosen charities, including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
Peter Reilly, from the Virgin Media Hook office, began the 43-mile relay race handing over the baton to Steve Dubois from Peterborough, Michael Handby from Manchester, Warren Deakin from Stockport, Nikki Thompson from Sheffield – the only female runner in the team – and finally Andrew Worthington from Liverpool who brought the team over the finish line.
As each runner took up their stage of the race the remaining runners entered local towns and villages with collection buckets helping to drum up support for their charities.
Andrew Worthington, business analyst at Virgin Media – who also took part in the Liverpool half marathon recently to further boost his fundraising – said: “The relay race is really important to us not only as preparation for the Virgin London Marathon but also to help raise awareness and funds for charity.
"I am raising money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital which does such amazing work for young children all year round, I couldn't think of a more deserving local cause.
"This was the first time the Virgin Media marathon runners have all been together for an event and it felt amazing bringing the team home over the finish line in Liverpool."
