ARENA Instrumentation, Britain’s largest independent calibration and maintenance service provider, is finalising plans to establish its first overseas base near Malmo in Sweden before the end of the year.

The 25 year old technology management specialists headquartered at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, has identified the region as a promising source of new business opportunities as well as having a rich supply of potential staff among its highly qualified population.

Arena’s directors have confirmed the location is ideal for the company’s first outpost on the European mainland and have given the go-ahead for the first stage of an international expansion programme.

Managing Director David Dawe said: "These are exciting times for Arena.

"We are convinced a presence in Sweden will present the company with some significant new opportunities for further growth.

“Extensive market research tells us that there are a large number of Swedish businesses operating in sectors in which we have a wealth of experience, who could potentially become our clients.

“Our expertise in calibration, laboratory equipment maintenance, technical support and asset management will be of interest to potential clients among the pharmaceutical, R&D, pharmaceutical and healthcare companies that operate in and around Malmo.

“The plan is to establish a base, staff it with local resource including highly qualified technicians and engineers and offer the comprehensive and cost-effective service that we have developed here in the UK over more than two decades.”

The company has been taking advice from the UK Trade and Investment Northwest (UKTI) who have advised on Arena’s expansion plans, added Mr Dawe whose £3.5 million turnover organisation employs 65 full time staff in offices in Cheshire, Loughborough and Gloucester.

UKTI Trade Advisor Mike Connor said: “We are really excited about working closely with Arena and are confident of success in this venture.”

Arena, whose blue-chip client base includes Rolls Royce and the NHS, has committed a £250,000 investment in establishing its first overseas post but is convinced the potential returns are enormous.

“Our teams have worked on projects across Europe, the USA and further afield so we know their skills and Arena’s expertise are valued,” added Mr Dawe. “We have also known for some time that expanding overseas was the natural next step for our company which has enjoyed consistent growth from day one.

“Now we are about to take the first step into a new adventure for the company and I am confident we will be successful.”
