High number of jobs for HGV drivers

A company who offer training within the HGV industry has expanded its workforce due to a shortage of qualified drivers.

The number of vacancies was reported to have risen 180% from 2009, and companies have been struggling to fill positions.

Top Gear Recruitment, formed in 2004, have sprung into action by hiring Paul Rowlands to boost their dedicated driver training team.

He will work alongside Brian Coffey, Paul Gentle and lead trainer John Heywood.

The business provides its service throughout the North West and Yorkshire, with drivers going on to work for companies such as Wincanton, DHL and Next.

Their specialist training includes the Certificate in Professional Competence course, which equips Britain’s vocational drivers with road safety and fuel efficiency skills.

James Mallick, operations director, believes that although job prospects in most other industries are bleak at the moment, the high number of vacancies is worrying.

He said: “The current shortage of drivers is a real concern. There’s a limited amount of new blood coming into the HGV industry and strict qualifications must be met.

“Paul’s appointment will help us to continue developing the skills of our drivers and increase fuel efficiency, whilst simultaneously reducing accidents and tachograph infringements.

“With a number of new clients coming on board in the next few months, we expect to recruit another two driver trainers to meet the demand.”
