A Liverpool region town centre is set to receive a massive boost with Wirral Council and Asda agreeing terms to build a new superstore.
The new store which will be built on land at Grange Road / Oliver Street, Birkenhead, will be approximately 90,000 square feet when completed and will front onto main high street Grange Road to maximise the regeneration benefits to the town centre as a whole.
The store is expected to create 95 jobs during construction and up to 320 new full and part time jobs created by the store’s third year of trading, with building work to get underway by Autumn this year.
Councillor Simon Holbrook, deputy leader of Wirral Council and cabinet member for corporate resources said: "This news is a real boost to the Wirral economy and is a vote of confidence in Birkenhead town centre from a major retailer.
"We very much hope the store will act as a catalyst for other developments in the area and that local people will benefit from the many jobs created.
"The Council have worked closely with the developer Castlewood Developments (Birkenhead) Ltd. and Asda over a number of years to ensure that Birkenhead gets the very best retail offer available."
Philip Bartram, property communications manager for Asda said: “We are delighted to be able to progress our plans for a new store in Birkenhead. The new Asda will provide significant employment opportunities for local people, as well as giving shoppers access to Asda’s low prices and excellent customer service.”
