Keepers at Knowsley Safari Park have chosen a giant subject for the final event in this year’s series of conservation and natural history talks marking the attraction’s 40th anniversary.

Co-ordinator of the Space for Giants project Dr Max Graham will talk about elephant conservation in Kenya in the Safari Park Education Centre at 7pm on Wednesday 14th December.

The aim of Space for Giants is to preserve Kenya’s last free-ranging elephant population and the ecosystem they inhabit in and around the Laikipia plateau in the north-central area of the country.

Dr Graham and his team are working with partner organisations and local people to monitor the region’s elephant population, reduce human-elephant conflict, prevent poaching and secure the space the elephants need.

This work is vital, because in recent years a steep rise in Kenya’s human population has put immense pressure on elephant habitat.

As a result, elephants have increasingly come into conflict with humans causing crop and property damage and confrontations that have resulted in farmers being injured or even killed.

Dr Graham said: “In many places elephants are really being squeezed by the increase in human activity, and a number of other species are in danger of being affected in a similar way.

“It’s up to us to tackle this issue before it¹s too late, and securing space for the largest mammals on earth is a good place to start.”

Knowsley Safari Park General Manager David Ross added: “This year’s programme of 40th anniversary talks has been a big success and it's something that we will be looking to continue in the future.

“I am delighted that the final event of the year will focus on the excellent work of Space for Giants which is one of the many conservation charities that we support.”

Space for Giants has also been chosen as the park’s nominated charity for 2012. This year’s events in support of Save the Rhino raised £6,000 from visitors, which was matched by a £6,000 donation from the park.

Tickets for the talk are £7 each, with all proceeds going to Space for Giants. For more information and to book places ring 0151 430 9009 or email r.saunders@knowsley.com.
