Two years ago, in spite of the dreaded word 'Recession' local businesswoman Gemma Bithell decided to take the plunge and buy the store at which she had been learning her trade. Gemma's vision for the store quickly grew since she took over as proprietor of the Interflora florist on Booker Avenue, Mossley Hill, where customers can send flowers throughout the UK, local, national and worldwide.

Owner of Booker Flowers and Gifts Gemma Bithell, 35, said: "The decision to quit my previous job and train as a florist was not something I did lightly.
"Previously working as a Area sales manager for a gift wrap company, I loved the sales and fast pace of the job but felt I was neglecting my creative side.
"I was looking for something that combined both and decided to give floristry a go. To be sure of my plans, I undertook a 2 year evening course in professional floristy alongside my day job.
"It took a lot of effort to keep it up but as each month passed I knew floristry was what I wanted to do.
"My first thought was to buy a shop outright but knew it would be best, and a lot less of a steep learning curve, if I was to gain some experience on a shop floor, especially during the three peaks of Christmas, Valentines and Mothers Day.
"I know now that was the right thing to do, in floristry, compared to a normal week, these trading periods are insanely different.
"Found a job working in the shop I now own. I had decided to give myself a year and would then look into getting own shop.
"When I heard the owner was thinking of selling I leapt at the chance to make an offer. As I had worked in the shop, and loved the location, I knew what I would do to increase the business.
"I've added gifts and increased wedding trade as I specialised in it during my course.
"Business is going well and I can honestly say, despite the hard work, I love my job now.
"Life's too short to contemplate anything but enjoying what you do."
