With the opening of its third clinic in Mold, Pro.Med Laser Clinics, owner Jan Williams invited Click Liverpool along to try out her specialist laser treatment.

Liverpool born Jan found herself experiencing unwanted facial hair growth caused by medication for treatment for kidney failure in 1996. Jan was referred to a dermatologist resulting in the inspiration to launch her own laser hair removal clinic in 1998.

Following the success of clinics in Frodsham and St Helens, Jan has expanded into North Wales with the aim of providing cosmetic laser and skin treatments to adults and children suffering from severe depression, low self esteem and bullying throughout the North West.

Upon arrival at Pro.Med's Mold clinic, tucked away behind a busy shopping street, visitors are guaranteed privacy and a warm welcome from Jan and her fully qualified medical team.

Within a few minutes of meeting Jan for a consultation I was put at ease by her confidence in achieving incredible results and an unswerving faith in her equipment.

Having already tried IPL laser hair removal on my upper lip in the past with fair but not outstanding results, I asked Jan what the difference would be with her equipment.

Jan Williams, owner of Pro.Med Lasers explained: "The laser service we offer is different from IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) which cannot be used on all skin types, often leaving those with darker skin frustrated.

"Our Cynosure Elite laser workstation is one of the most comprehensive laser hair removal systems available. It does not rely on heat travelling down the hair to the root - the laser targets the root of the hair directly.

"Since it is designed for all skin types, we can treat the broadest range of patients with the very best results.

"The same laser is used by some of the country's leading medical clinics as well doctors surgeries and hospitals as well as private, well known clinic's such as The Harley Medical Group.

"I know the importance of using the correct equipment and went on many research trips to the US to secure the best class 4 medical grade lasers.

"All of our staff have been trained in the field of medical lasers under the supervision of Cynosure Lasers and Mapperley Park Training Centre in Nottingham. In addition to this, we are registered by the Care Quality Commission.

"It is a real concern these days that equipment is available to buy for pretty much anyone who can afford to, and there are no longer enough checks in place to ensure these operators are fully trained."

Convinced I was in the safest hands in the North West, Jan led me into the treatment room and talked me through the different wavelengths used. With my fair to olive skin, she chose an intermediate wavelength on the Apogee Laser which can treat most skin types and hair of varied thickness.

After cleansing the area to be treated, eye protectors are worn by both the client and the laser operator. First zapping my underarm with a succession of short, sharp bursts of red laser, the pain is fleeting and much like a heated pin prick. A cooling burst of air is blown onto the skin providing an instant relief to a short-lived burning sensation.

Jan worked at lightning speed, with both underarms and my upper lip taking just 5 minutes to treat with relatively little discomfort.

Most remarkable in comparison to IPL treatment, the Apogee laser's effectiveness was clear as it literally blasted away hairs from the root leaving my upper lip hair free as I left the clinic. Soothing aloe vera gel is recommended for the first 48 hours and although you can apply make up after treatment, I would advise keeping the evening following an appointment free as my upper lip displayed some redness for 24 hours.

Having experienced first hand the negative psychological effect unsightly hair can have, Jan's passion for providing an affordable solution to unwanted hair, veins, scars or tattoos is inspiring. And, unlike many other laser hair removal clinics, Jan recognises that clients prefer an affordable 'pay as you go' option rather than asking for a lengthy course of treatments up front.
