Supported by St Helens Council and www.visitsthelens.com, hundreds of fans, dignitaries and iconic players came together to say a fond farewell to Knowsley Road at the three-day event on the hallowed turf.
Compered by Gordon Burns, Friday night’s '17 Greatest Saints Gala Dinner' saw the likes of Tom van Vollenhoven, Cliff Watson and Alex Murphy join Paul Newlove, Paul Sculthorpe and Chris Joynt to recognise some of the greatest players in the club’s history.
Accepting his award to a tear-jerking standing ovation, Saints legend Van Vollenhoven said: “This is the greatest honour; I have had lots to be thankful for in my life, I was fortunate to play for South Africa as a 20-year-old against the British Lions, but being in such wonderful company here tonight is amazing.
“I came from South Africa to play at Saints during the 60’s with some amazing players; I played for the greatest Rugby Club ever.”
While Paul Sculthorpe added: “To be included in the greatest 17 is the biggest honour I have had so far – it’s fantastic to be up here with some of the legendary names we are honouring. We have been spoiled with so much success in the last ten years and as we move forward to the new stadium it will take us to the next level on and off the pitch.”
And Alex Murphy OBE had one thing to say: “Saints isn’t just a Rugby Club, it’s the best club in the world.”
On Saturday, X-Factor stars Husstle made their first appearance on their nationwide tour as part of a Fans Farewell party and a performance from the legendary 'Saintsations Cheerleaders' brought down the house.
Then came Sunday’s fun-filled special Family Day which culminated in a stunning firework display to mark the end of the festival.
All events were held in the stunning Mahood marquee that dwarfed the pitch and stands at the famous old venue.
Debbie Thompson, Head of Commercial Operations at St Helens Rugby League club, said: “The weekend was a fantastic celebration of 120 years of sporting excellence at this most iconic of stadia.
“I’m sure many a tear was shed as fans came together with sporting legends as we said goodbye to Knowsley Road. We’d like to thank the Village Hotel in Whiston for helping us accommodate the legends, Carlsberg and Magners for their excellent sponsorship and Mahood Marquees for the venue that housed such a popular festival.”
