What kind of state are we in?

I was looking at a selection of photographs taken by Peter Carr on his website 'vanilladays'. Peter photographed the BNP and Anti BNP demonstrations that took place in Liverpool on Saturday 29th November. www.vanilladays.com

Very emotive black and white photographs, strange that demonstrations do not look nearly as dramatic when the photographs are in colour.

These photographs are in the best photojournalist tradition and well worth a look. It is very difficult to tell which group is which from the photographs, apart from the placards.

There are the anti BNP placards "The BNP is a Nazi party" "Smash the BNP" and "Stop the fascist BNP"

While the BNP struck back with "New Labour is a Dictatorship" and "New Labour Anti-Democratic Anti-free speech, Anti-British".

It is worth noting that it all seems to have gone off very peacefully.

Several years ago I stood as an independent candidate in the local elections in Sefton. I was on a local issues ticket. Mundane yet important things like rubbish collections, parking, drunken yobs and late night bars. All issues that concerned local people.

Labour had not held the seat for several years and made a great effort to regain the seat, as you might imagine they would.

I was later told that when people had said to the Labour canvasser on the doorstep that they would be voting for me, they were told "Well it's up to you if you want to let the BNP in by the back door" never actually saying I was a member of the BNP. But doing enough to split the vote between me and the Lib Dems and letting-in an ineffectual Labour Party member, who was not even a local, to win the seat.

This week, reading about the dawn raid arrest of a sitting MP, that if it were happening a Banana Republic, would be condemned. I thought about my experience in a democratic election and thought, "Is this a police state?"

There are more surveillance cameras in Britain than anywhere else in the world. Our emails and telephone calls are being stored. Without a mandate a DNA bank has been set-up and identity cards are being forced upon us.

I have also read this week about cameras, that it is claimed can detect "the intention to commit a crime". What happened to "innocent until proved guilty" We have a faceless bureaucracy is supervising what we eat and drink. Do not even think about smoking.

Fascist State? We are living in one.
