Last year wild flower displays at the junction of Great Georges Street and Upper Parliament Street were mulched. They were covered in bark chippings because, according to some officious council officer “They were a distraction to drivers and could cause an accident.”
Liverpool City Council took this action on our behalf. It had nothing to do with the fact that it was local residents who sowed the seeds that produced these flowers, not the council.
So... please can Council Chief Executive Colin (show me the money) Hilton explain to me why it is not acceptable to have "distracting" wild flowers, yet is acceptable to have a 100 foot long flashing screen on Lime Street?
Is this not an even bigger distraction to drivers?
The difference, I would suggest, that is that the council is receiving an incentive for the hideous screen on Lime Street. "Oh", he will say "that it is good business... best practice” and all the other council speak reasons for inflicting on the citizens Liverpool an absolute eyesore.
What is the purpose of this screen? To advertise debt consolidation and articles that appeal to WAG wannabes. The rest of us are being encouraged by the environmental bandwagon to save the planet. Has that message not reached the upper echelons of Liverpool City Council? What did it cost to put up this screen and how much energy is being wasted?
I went along to the Albert Dock and see the display of Superlambanana Photographs by Crosby photographer Ron Davies.
The photographs he has taken of the Anthony Gormleys “Iron Men” are famous, many of which are also on display in the Albert Dock.
Well worth a visit, Ron will be in attendance each week-end till the end of September, in the gallery just along from The Tate. A framed photograph will make a wonderful and original Christmas present, Not that long to go.
