The Lemmings of Liverpool

Three times in the last week Lemmings have stepped out in front of the coach that I have been on. Pedestrians are the Lemmings of Liverpool (LoL).

I was on a tour and as we turned into Castle Street, driving towards the Town Hall, a young woman stepped in front of the coach, when the driver sounded the horn she gave him a rude gesture.

The next day another woman walked across Victoria Street and was not even aware of the fact that she had walked in front of a coach.

The best was a young man on Menlove Avenue, he just walked in front of the coach and looked surprised to see us. Now when you walk in front of a coach that is 50 foot long and painted bright blue and yellow, should you really be out on you own?

What links all these incidents is that each one of them was talking on their mobile phone. If a motorist is talking on a mobile, a fine and 3 points on the licence and quite right.

It is dangerous to use a mobile while driving, but lemmings should also be held responsible for their own actions.

Which brings me to a wonderful example of getting the roads wrong. Not only have the roads of Liverpool been ruined by the so called "Big Dig", it was easier to get about before, but the pavements have also been wrecked.

A wonderful example of this is on the Albert Dock side of Wapping. How long have the Highways and
others been working on this stretch of road, 2, 3 years? And still they cannot get it right.

If you go to cross from the Albert Dock to The Police HQ, right in the middle is a grid, yes a grid, who ever thought it was a good idea to put a pedestrian crossing with a grid in the centre deserves the sack.

I gather there have been a number of complaints because it is so easy for a wheelchair to get stuck in these grids.

Now let me run this scenario by you. An elderly person, with a stick, having negotiated the tactile paving, steps on to the road, their walking stick goes down the grid, the elderly person loses their balance and falls over breaking their hip.

Rushed to hospital for a hip replacement, while in hospital they then catch MRSA and are in intensive care for months. The Council is then sued for negligence. This would be a huge cost to the public
purse. I mean us.

All because not one of the people involved in this road had the wit or wisdom to realise that it is not a good idea to put a grid in a crossing, if all the time and trouble that went into the planning of the "Big Dig" results in a mistake like this, no wonder the roads are in chaos.
