Clark Clegg, Superhero, will not be getting my vote. Two weeks ago he was a quiz question, “Name the Leader of the Lib-Dems” and you would not be sure of getting the correct answer.
I was talking to an American woman who thought that war criminal Tony Blair was still “President”. She is not alone most Americans have little knowledge of American politics, British politics is a foreign land to them.
They have a simple system, for a simple nation, Republicans or Democrats, that’s the choice. So it would be Conservatives or Labour and no third party muddying the waters.
Clark Clegg flew on to our screens with nothing to lose and the world to save, with a few well chosen phrases and a couple of pat answers the nation took him to their hearts, a bit like they took Susan Boyle, the outsider with talent, well Susan Boyle does have talent.
What talent does snake oil salesman multimillionaire public school boy have other than he looks better than Gordon Brown, not difficult, and he sounds better than David Cameron?
He has no depth, a confessed atheist, so he will not uphold Christian values, he was pushed on his strange plan to give illegal immigrants an amnesty after living here 10 years, but was not able to say how you could prove they had been here ten years.
His European policy is a bit odd as well, he would take us into the Euro, which I think we are well out of. Just look at Greece. Spain and Portugal, all suffering being part of the Euro now that the good times and subsidies have stopped.
Why Clark Clegg Superhero will not be getting my vote is much more local. The Lib-Dems have been in charge of Liverpool for the past ten years and there have had some great successes, the redevelopment of the city centre and Liverpool One. Capital of Culture was a great success in 2008 and we are still reaping in the benefits.
Five years ago it was possible to drive from Park Road to Scotland Road in about five minutes, now it takes twenty minutes and you are required to take the most time and fuel wasting route.
The Lib-Dems have inflicted on Liverpool the most congested road system outside of London. They have squandered millions of pounds of public money to create this congestion with its increase in pollution.
They have turned The Strand and the road past the Albert Dock into a constant jam by installing too many electricity consuming traffic lights.
Lime Street is a nightmare and we have pointless bus lanes. Bus Lanes were not needed and now cause problems, the only reason they have been added is to raise money. Any motorist that makes the mistake of using the Bus Lane receives a large fine.
Once wide streets have been narrowed to single file, no were is safe. Mount Pleasant around the Metropolitan Cathedral is being turned into a Bus Lane and narrowed for the safety of pedestrians. This is for the safety of the University students. If they are clever enough to get to University, they are clever enough to cross the road without Mummy holding their hands. These students are only here for six months of the year but the draconian traffic measures are enforced year round.
Old Hall Street and Tithebarne Street have become impassable most of the time. The Lib-Dems and their appointed Council Officers will bleat that the safety of pedestrians is paramount and if one life is saved it is worth it.
What about the lives blighted by the increased pollution due to idling engines and to say nothing of the impact of stress caused to motorists?
The Lib Dems do not except any responsibility when their road system has caused deaths, such as those at the very confusing Adelphi junction. It used to be so easy and simple to drive along Lime Street, just think how difficult it is now and ask why. Has it added to the quality of life here in Liverpool, no it has not. Now some idiot of a Council Officer is saying the air quality is so poor that we need to do something about it.
Of course it is, cars sitting in jams and needlessly creating fumes that cause problems, if the cars were moving the local air quality would be better.
This is an excuse to bring in a Congestion Charge and deterred motorists from coming to Liverpool.
The Lib Dems have an illogical and pathological hatred of the motorist and when you get Clark Clegg you also get the tree hugging, sandel wearing, cyclying vegiterians who want to change this country into some sort of Utopia that only exists in dreamland.
When I look at the havoc that has been inflicted on the streets of Liverpool in the past ten years and I think that, if elected, the Lib Dems could do the same to this country I realise that my vote is too valuable to waste on Mr Nicolas Clegg.
It is a real shame that there is no box on the ballot paper that gives the option to put “none of the above” Then we might see some real change and real choice for the electorate.
