Liverpool; In the Zone?

Rafa Benitez

I’ll admit I looked for it, I listened for it and I watched for it. But I failed to find it.

No it wasn’t a quote from Sir Alex Ferguson praising Liverpool. But, instead a comment from anyone in the media questioning Chelsea’s decision to go ‘man-to-man marking’ against Wigan on Saturday.

OK so Didier Drogba took the brunt of the blame, and rightly so, after allowing Titus Bramble to stroll away from him and head the ball home. But, that was it, as far as any negative comment got made, instead journalists declared how the ball wasn’t taken from the correct position for Hugo Rodallega’s corner.

So, no former player or pundit pointed the finger at Carlo Ancelotti for conceding a sloppy goal, which perhaps could have been avoided if a different method was taken.

You see during Rafa Benitez’s four year tenure at Anfield every time Liverpool concede from a corner or a free kick the ‘men in the know’ tend to launch tyrant attacks of Benitez’s zonal-marking.

The fact is last season Liverpool conceded ten fewer goals than media darlings Arsenal, and only three more than United and Chelsea. Last season’s title wasn’t lost at the decision to opt for zonal marking, but the lack of flair going forward during games at Anfield. However this season in four games at home the Reds have notched an impressive 15 goals, that’s five more than next highest Spurs with 10.
I suppose it all comes down to agenda, and perhaps the media aren’t ready for another Liverpool side to dominate the game as it did before footballers wore sarongs and married pop stars. Even so I’m sure Benitez and the fans of Liverpool stopped listening a long time ago.
