Last laugh on Manchester?

Toweringly awful?

Liverpool has some of the finest buildings in Britain outside London.

You will go a long way to find anything that compares with the grandeur of St George's Hall.

The Anglican Cathedral is magnificent and the last great structure of its kind that will ever be built in the UK. A feast for the eyes.

The Roman Catholic Cathedral too is an astonishing modern building with grace and symmetry and a truly iconic badge for the city.

They have started calling the group of buildings at the Pier Head the Three Graces.

It's a pity that lack of cash and small minds means the new Liverpool Museum (X-Box) looks like it will wreck the scene and become The Fourth Disgrace.

But I think Liverpool can pat itself on the back and have the last laugh on Manchester.

What's the joke? A Liverpool-based firm, the Beetham Group, and its architects have collected a top Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award... for the worst EYSORE in the region.

Yes RIBA's judges have proved that they are stark, staring mad by handing 5th place in their 2008 national awards to the "Hilton Tower" in Manchester.

It's just plain potty. The general reaction on first sight is "What the hell is that?!" and I pity the poor folk who have to look at it every day of their lives.

But then, we are not doing much better in Liverpool and presumably our own new eyesores simply failed to make the cut for RIBA.

I would have thought that the West Tower would have been in with a shout. Maybe it's just not shockingly awful enough?
