Sad to see witness closure of the Contemporary Urban Centre, in Greenland Street. It has been the home for our office for almost exactly two years and we have enjoyed being there.
Unfortunately the Novas Scarman Trust, the charity that has run the CUC since it opened has lost a lot of its funding and has to concentrate on its core activities of helping the homeless and disadvantaged, mainly in London.
I once received a letter of thanks from Lord Scarman after his visit to Liverpool when he was compiling his report on the riots of 1981. We sent him some photographs and he sent a letter signed simply "Scarman". I was impressed!
What went wrong with the CUC then? Well, it is an excellent and interesting venue in an old cotton warehouse.
It is in a rather out-of-the way location and acted as a pathfinder, flagship for the Baltic Creative Quarter.
More work is currently going on to convert other less attractive modern workshops into units for creative enterprises.
Not good that the battleship is holed below the waterline while the fleet of little ships is about to be launched in her wake.
We shall see. I was sceptical 30 years ago when they said the Albert Dock would be a tourist attraction and I was wrong.
But will the CUC be revived as an arts venue. I hope so, but I have a suspicion that it might be turned into apartments.
Meanwhile, we will be moving later this month to the Queens Dock Business Centre, Norfolk Street, which looks like it will be a good place to work.
