In an alternative dimension a 64-year-old who was christened James Paul McCartney is an unknown Scouser who likes his pop music.
And in that parallel life he paid good money to get into Anfield to watch his idol... the local boy made good.
Maybe it's a daft idea. But what struck me was that deep down Paul is still the same bloke he was always going to be. And what's more, he probably would have enjoyed it just as much if he had been in the audience.
Of course in reality it was Sir Paul the living legend himself up there on stage.
But you did get the feeling that he is pinching himself still because part of him finds it hard to credit that he really is the most famous and important person ever to have come out of the city of Liverpool.
And like thousands of others I had to keep pinching myself because we could hardly believe our luck at being there to witness him write a new chapter in the history of his native city.
This was Liverpool Sound, a concert in a cathedral of soccer that had a faintly religious feel to it.
The faithful had come to worship at the altar of the cult of the Beatles and its high priest did not fail them for one moment.
We were there to witness a spectacle and to imprint these sounds and images in our minds, memories we will cherish till the day we die. We can all say "I was there when Paul played Liverpool Sound."
The Kaiser Chiefs and The Zutons were good warm-up acts but we had all come to see the Master at work.
Sir Paul had something for everyone, representing every stage of his muscial career and yet he left us wanting more... and you got the feeling he actually wanted to give us more.
For a couple of hours it was just us and Paul. Time stood still and it could have gone on for hours and hours and we would have lapped it all up.
It was just a perfect night. It does not get any better than this and those memories are worth more than money can buy and so different from watching on TV.
Thank you James Paul McCartney. It's a pity you could not have been in the audience yourself.
I'm sure you'd have loved it!
