Where are the new events from the 08 legacy?

Summer in the city is here at last and the old place is looking good with flowers brimming from pots and beds everywhere, even if the works in Derby Square are taking an age!

The 08 culture legacy is not quite so evident. Sure there are events being planned and the Summer Pops will be a real treat, but where are the big new outdoor events that we were promised?

The Mathew Street Festival goes from strength to strength and that shows there is a huge demand for the kind of razzmatazz that Liverpool does so well.

The new boss of the Mersey Partnership, Rob Holmes. has got quite a task on his hands if he is going to pull together all the bodies in the Liverpool City Region to really deliver that O8 Legacy.

It needs some big showcase events. He talks a good fight and I hope he pulls it off.

One slight niggle about the the "street scene", as they like to call it at the Town Hall, is about some of the pavement drinking areas that have sprung-up everywhere.

Now, I agree that the cafe culture calls for dining and drinking al fresco. The locals and the tourists all need these facilities.

But it has to be controlled, or it is a dangerous free-for-all.

I was shocked to see the way the pavement has been almost entirely blocked outside the Slaughter House pub in Fenwick Street. The tables have colonised about 90 per cent of the width of what is a broad pavement!

It can't be right. At busy times pedestrians are virtually forced to step into the road... and what about the blind and partially sighted? They have enough hurdles to contend with.

I think it's time the city council sent out some enforcement teams on this... it would make a change from hounding motorists!
